Illustration and Graphic novels
Craig Thompson was born in 1975 and grew up in Michigan with a strong Christian background, censored by his parents, Craig and his brother could read, watch or listen too anything their parents deemed un-Christian. He was born to draw; he’d draw all the time. His second big work was “blankets” a part auto biographical, part coming of age, part relationship graphic novel. However, it is often referred to as an “Illustrated Novel” due to its hand written feel and process.
There are many opportunities and rewards in the role of being an illustrator. Craig Thompson went traveling to research for his book “Habibi” which took him seven years to make. The amount of life experiences and cultural discoveries he gain during this time in the Middle East is priceless.
Blankets was an original masterpiece made in 2003, it took Craig three years to make, the thumbnail draft took three 1 year to make and then went on to draw two pages a day for two years until it was done.
I had read many books but blankets did something that no other book did, it was honest and easy to relate too. There was simplicity to his illustrations, the use of pen and ink, spot colour and flawless line work combined with the remarkably precise story telling of a tale of a hole that every person falls into sooner or later.
There’s a mixture of simple illustrations surrounded by lots of white space combined with other pages that have hordes of OCD like detail that creates an immense feeling of depth in every frame.
The use of pattern reveals invisible sensations that the reader can connect to emotionally, the blend of illustration and pattern within a frame can convey an emotion in your subconscious. He has gained many awards for his career as an illustrator and writer:
2004 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album for Blankets, 2004 Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist for Blankets, 2004 Harvey Award for Best Artist for Blankets, 2004 Harvey Award for Best Cartoonist for Blankets, 2004 Harvey Award for Best Graphic Album of Original Work for Blankets, 2004 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Artist for Blankets, 2004 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel or Collection for Blankets and 2012 Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist for Habibi.
The Role of an illustrator is to illustrate something, whether it’s an emotion, a fashion idea or a scene. The opportunities that come from illustration is the opportunity to empty yourself onto paper, relieve your mind by leaking it out through pen onto paper. (or whatever mediums)
